Shanghai was founded by foreign governments in the mid-eighteen hundreds. It started as a British concession after the first opium war but other nations were quick to follow suit setting up their concessions at the opportune location at the mouth of the Yangtze River.
The British were joined by the French, Japanese, Dutch, Americans and a hodgepodge of others as Shanghai grew in prominence as a major port. Remnants of the era are well preserved downtown in an area facing the river known as the Bund as well as the district of Puxi where you can walk down many of Shanghai's alleys to see the historical homes still in use and many well maintained.
Now that the Mao era has passed Shanghai is beginning to regain its past glory as the Pearl of the Orient. The central government has held nothing back in promoting Shanghai as the economic leader of China. The economic success of Shanghai has always been heavily reliant of co-operation with the west and is still today. Because of this, Shanghai is able to provide almost all those products and services available to those in the west.
Today Shanghai offers bullet trains, an ever expanding subway system, home delivery pizza, glitzy shopping centres and 7 Elevens on every corner. This is the city to change your ideas of what China is and to help you see what China wants to be. Without a stop to Shanghai on your trip you’ll not understand what China is today and where it’s going.

Archeological digs in the Banpo area (Xi an) show an agricultural based community at that time. This was to create the basis for the first period of China, or, the Xia Dynasty (2200-1700BC).
The following period, or, the Shang Dynasty (1700-1100BC) was marked by the introduction of bronze working and was also the period in which the first Chinese characters can be... Cont'd
